How do you keep from feeling depressed during the hoildays?

Posted on Dec 28th, 2007 by pookietooth : Sun lover pookietooth
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for December 28, 2007:

I reach out to others so that I can forget myself a bit, especially the self-pity stuff. I try to, anyway, when I'm not too busy feeling sorry for myself. I make phone calls, send cards, go to friends' houses, and talk to my family and friends as much as possible. When I get depressed, I tend to spiral downwards to the point that I don't feel like living anymore, I get so jealous of others that it cuts me off from them. Yet somehow, talking to real other people, not just looking at their lives and envying them, makes me feel better. I have learned that if I feel suicidal, the best thing I can do is just to procrastinate, so to speak. "I don't have time to die today, I'll do it tomorrow." After a few weeks of that, I eventually feel better.

Wishing you well, dear one, and many fewer blue days in the coming year!  My mama was a wise woman when she told me “the best way to stop feeling sorry for yourself is to find something to do for someone else.”  Here's to eternal procrastination and the many gifts you give of yourself to your family and friends!

Thanks, mamakat. That's so true, although often the idea of going anywhere is too much.

I wanted to add that right now, I don't feel like dying, which is a nice thing. I am taking some amino acids – DL Phenylanine and 5 HTP – and they seem to take away the self-loathing, which is the key for me.
